When Should You Repair vs Replace a Laptop?

If your laptop is slow, overheating, or the battery won’t last, it’s not always obvious whether a repair is worth it. Use this checklist to decide quickly, and avoid spending money twice.

A good rule of thumb: if a repair restores speed + reliability for a reasonable cost, repair. If the laptop is old and multiple issues are stacking up, replacement usually wins.

Repair is usually worth it if…

  • The laptop is under ~4 years old and otherwise in good condition.
  • The fix is straightforward (SSD upgrade, battery replacement, RAM upgrade, thermal clean).
  • You need to keep it (special software, work setup, or familiar workflow).

Replace is usually smarter if…

  • The laptop is 6+ years old and feels slow even after cleanup.
  • There are multiple issues (battery + keyboard + random shutdowns).
  • It can’t run modern software smoothly (video calls, browser tabs, updates).

The top “high value” repairs

  1. SSD upgrade (biggest speed improvement for older laptops).
  2. Battery replacement if the laptop is otherwise fine.
  3. Thermal clean if it’s overheating or loud.

Before you repair or replace: back up

If your laptop is unstable, back up important files first. Even “simple” jobs can fail if a drive is already degrading.
